ANIMA 1 & 2

A pair of binding-free snowboards for urban hills. The handpainted monsters are a subconscious form of self-portrait, facets of the many alter-egos which make up our inner worlds. Sometimes they want to escape and be free. Anima 1 is a shy and sensitive being with periscopic snail eyes and multiple feelers who wants to see and experience everything. Anima 2 is protected with fur and horns, one who observes the world around it, looking for multiple perspectives to make sense of what it sees. The handle for Anima 1 is a driftwood stick I picked up at Point Pleasant Park the first summer I moved back to Canada, stained with Chinese ink, sealed with shoe polish, and attached by a fluorescent red hand-braided paracord leash.

I made these snowboards during a 9-month residency at the Centre for Craft Nova Scotia. In the exhibition image, the stumps came from a large chestnut tree in front of my apartment. A branch from the same tree gave me the wheels for Free Ride.
