A SEAT AT THE TABLE

Having a seat at the table does not always mean equitable treatment. This work is part institutional critique and part narrative exploration.

This installation is made up of a Victorian styled chair and a fluorescent orange vinyl mat. The chair is a found object, which was damaged and grimy. The seat has been “reupholstered” with beach brick and chicken wire, and refinished with Chinese ink and shoe polish.

The fluorescent orange mat draws attention; it is not possible to camouflage and quietly integrate into the allotted space, which is also too small to be comfortable.

The tiger paws refer to a Chinese idiom in which a crouching tiger is one whose talent is underestimated and denied opportunities to reach their full potential.

Materials: salvaged chair, Chinese ink, acrylic, shoe polish, chicken wire, galvanized steel wire, beach brick, vinyl mat
