"The act of sewing is a process of emotional repair."
– Louise Bourgeois
A selection of embroidered works.
Family Tree I is a portrait of my parents, based on a black-and-white photo taken before they were married. The fabric is a hand-marbled cotton from my undergrad days.
Family Tree II is a self-portrait in acrylic and ink on paper, attached to cotton with a hand-stitched border.
Family Tree III is my cat, a watercolour drawing with embroidered cape, lightning bolts and line details.
Hot Air Trump was made for Tiny Pricks Project, “a public art project where contributors from around the world stitch Trump’s words into textiles, creating the material record of his presidency and of the movement against it.” The quote references Trump’s dream for Space Force, and the Trump baby references the 6m tall helium-filled blimp flown over the British Parliament in protest to his visit to London in July 2018. I started with a little watercolour sketch, appliqued the figure to a cotton itajime shibori sample from my undergrad days, and embroidered through both layers. The text is set in an original font I designed.
In lieu of is a 2-page Incident Report form which has been stitched together with hot pink thread. “Sometimes all you need is a hot bath and a glass of wine” is a direct quote, the advice nonchalantly offered with a smirk by the male technician who decided not to file a report after I was struck by flying material from another person’s slack equipment setup.
